Hi friends! I’m Jess and this is Book Club for the Planet, an online community for us to read about the climate crisis and solutions, together. A couple of times a month, I write this newsletter to share our updated reading list, book club updates, and other TBD musings on climate.
If you’re just getting started, our first book is The Fate of Food: What We’ll Eat in a Bigger, Hotter, Smarter World by Amanda Little. There’s still time to read the book and join us for our first meet-up, which is what today’s newsletter is all about!
I feel a lot like Kramer these days… stepping outside my front door, opening up my News app, or scrolling through social media is a constant shock to the system. But that’s what we’re here for – to kvetch together and then ground ourselves in the writing, insights and (hopefully) wisdom of other leaders.
And with that, let’s get down to business.
Meet-up dates!
For each book, we will plan to hold two meet-ups to accommodate folks’ schedules and time zones. You are welcome to attend one or both of the meet-ups, but the structure will be mostly the same. Each meet-up will last approximately 90 minutes.
Our meet-up dates for our first book, The Fate of Food, are Sunday, October 18 at 1 pm EDT and Tuesday, October 20 at 6 pm EDT. Author Amanda Little will join us for the first 30 minutes of our second meet-up on October 20.
Our meet-up dates for our second book, All We Can Save, are Sunday, December 6 at 1 pm EST and Tuesday, December 8 at 6 pm EST.
How Zoom book clubs will work!
While I will continue to use Substack (this newsletter) as my primary channel for communicating with you all, it’s a public-facing blog, which poses a security risk to sharing Zoom links here.
To solve this, I will send out Zoom registration links to our meet-ups through a private newsletter via Mailchimp that will land straight in your inbox. You do not need to do anything to receive this private newsletter with Zoom links! If you’re subscribed to this Substack newsletter, you’re covered.
Please register for one (or both) of the meet-ups that you plan to join so we can properly plan out our agenda and break-out groups.
Getting more involved!
Want to connect with other book club members in between meet-ups on our book club Slack? Or want to volunteer as a book club organizer to help with planning and meet-ups? Please reach out and let me know.
That’s it, for now! Keep an eye out for that separate email with Zoom registration links.
Until next time, stay safe, stay hydrated, and stay determined.
Jess
